BNN Commercial Assignment

        For this assignment, I made a 30-second commercial for our on-campus news show Bulldog News Now. It is important to the South Carolina State University Communications program that we keep students, faculty, and alumni up to date with SC State sports, campus life, and even surrounding areas. Everyday it is our mission to gain more viewers

BNN helps students that are in the Communications major improve in different areas such as broadcasting, journalism, media, and more!

Creative Lighting

For this assignment, we used creative lighting. With creative lighting, we want to try to focus light on different parts of the face.  

This is an example of flat frontal lighting. In this picture, you can see that the lighting is focusing on the model's whole face. 

In this picture, One side of the model's face is dark and the other half is highlighted. This is an example of split lighting.

This picture is an example of Rembrandt or 45-degree lighting. In the photo, you can see the model's nose creates a shadow on the face 

Here we have the model making his "scared" look. In the studio, we cut off all lights and used a cell phone flashlight to cast a small amount of light under the model's chin. 

Three Point Lighting

 For this assignment, we were to use the Three-point Lighting method, which would involve three special lights the fill light, backlight, and key light. Each light plays an important role when it comes to photography, especially studio photography. We brought our model, Juan into the studio and placed him on the stool 

This photo is a wide shot using no lighting for the model. You may see a little lighting in the studio but that's just natural lighting from the window. 

This is a close-up version of the model not using any lighting. As you can tell, there isn't anything that is highlighted on the model's face. Again, the lighting that you see is natural lighting. 

In this picture, you can tell that his face is somewhat highlighted now with the background being dark. In this shot, we were using the key light and fill light.

This picture is an example of what using the backlight looks like. In this picture, the model blends in less with the background now that we are using all lights.

Reflector Disk Use

 

For this project, we were to use a reflector disk to see the difference in the lighting when using and not using the reflector disk. We brought our Reporter, Sharlene Luke to see the difference in the lighting using the reflector disk and also without using the disk 

Here is what the lighting looks like without using the reflector disk! You can tell that Sharlene's face has no highlights or glare on it. 

 This is the result of using the reflector disk. If you can tell, there is more of a highlight and glare on the reporter's face!

5 Question Interview with Delano Whitfield

For this assignment, I interviewed SC State's student, Delano Whitfield. I wanted to get insight into who he is and what made him choose SC State. Whitfield is a Communications major with dreams of becoming a motivational speaker and a poet. Whitfield chose the Communication major because he felt it fits best with his profession. Delano Whitfield then says that after he receives his degree he wants to pursue the dreams of motivational speaking and poetry.

Person On The Street

This semester has not too long started and we have the largest class of freshmen in SC State's history. I assumed that even upper-class students were looking forward to homecoming and athletes are looking forward to the football games with cheers from bulldog fans. For this project, I went around campus to interview 5 students to get insight on what they were most looking forward to with us being 4 weeks into the semester. During interviews, most students are looking for the homecoming game, homecoming itself, and the football season itself.

30 Seconds About Me

Here is a video of me telling a little about myself in 30 seconds. 

I am a Junior at South Carolina State University. I am a proud member of the Beta Delta chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. My major here at South Carolina State is Broadcast Communication, I plan to work in the News industry to be a News Anchor/Reporter. Later In my career, I plan to work in public relations to be more involved with the community around me. My hobby at the moment is fashion. I love to thrift and make vintage and streetwear pieces of clothing into nice outfits.

Action Sequence

 For this assignment, I recorded an action sequence using multiple shots and angles of a student leaving class, getting water, and riding the elevator. The goal was to only use one camera but to make it look like there are multiple to catch the actor's movement. It was important that when we recorded, that the actor walked past the camera. Here's what we did

People On The Street

With bulldog fest coming in full effect. Students are excited and expecting nothing but good times. South Carolina state university has not had a bulldog fest in over 2 years due to the Covid pandemic. 

You may ask what’s bulldog fest, bulldog fest is a spring fest for students to go out and have a good time at special events on campus,

Spring football game, and more!

My favorite 5

One of my favorite songs is "Be Alive" by Beyoncé. "Be Alive" is one of my favorites because it expresses freedom. The melodies, riffs and runs are so smooth in the song. "Be Alive" was released on November 12th, 2021 for the "King Richard" movie. "King Richard" was a movie based on famous tennis players Serena Williams and Venus Williams. 

"Mercedes" by Brent Faiyaz is another one of my favorite songs. This song was released December 3rd, 2021. This song is a favorite because its so smooth, calm and relaxing. I usually listen to this song when I'm driving at night alone. 

My all time favorite song is "Closer" by Goapele. This song is also very relaxing to me. This song is 20 years old. It was released September 10th, 2002. how ironic that this is my favorite song and it was released the same year I was born. 

"BLACK EFFECT" by the Carters (Jay-Z and Beyoncé) is a favorite song because it simply makes me feel strong and confident. In 2018 I actually seen Jay-Z and Beyoncé preform this song in Atlanta Georgia at the Mercedes Benz Stadium. This concert was the best concert I've ever been to. I like to say that it was worth every penny. 

"Hold On" by a group named The Internet released this song in the summer of 2018. When I hear this song it puts me in the mind of summer days on the beach. I do plan to see them in concert one day. Not only is this my favorite song by The Internet, they're also my favorite music group. Their music is very soft and relaxing. If you ever in need of a clear mind or in need of relaxing, The internet would be a good group to have a back ground music.

Delano Whitfield, a junior at South Carolina State University who had just joined Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity Incorporated. I interviewed Whitfield to get more insights on his second semester this school year.

Who is Sandra Paul Miller

 On this day we interviewed Sandra Paul Miller. Who was a student at Wilkerson High School at the time also a member at Trinity United Methodist Church during the time of the
Orangeburg massacre 

We interviewed Miller so that she could tell us about her experiences at South Carolina State University campus and All-Star Bowling Alley. Not only did she tell us about her experience, but she also told us about how she and Delano Middleton were classmates.

One day, Miller and others decided to march down Russell Street after church, and sometimes they would march down Amelia St. As Miller and others march through Amelia St, a fire truck spraying and aiming water at them. Miller says she was thankful it was a Hot day out.

SOT: (1:23) OUT: I thank god it was a hot summer day

Another occasion that Miller remembers is spending the night in jail which was fearful but at the time she thought it was enjoyable trying to get integration for her community. the next morning Miller remembers having a good meal while in jail

Orangeburg Massacre

February 8th, 2022 marks the 54th anniversary of the Orangeburg massacre. 

A protest at South Carolina State University turned deadly. Highway patrolmen began to use open fire on more than 150 UNARMED black men. There were a total of 3 young men that were shot and killed (Samuel Hammond, Henry Smith, and Delano Middleton) leaving 28 people with wounds. 

On this day we interviewed Sandra Paul Miller.  who was a student 

 at Wilkerson High School at the time also a member at Trinity United Methodist Church

During this time Miller was 17 years old. Miller then continues on to the death of Middleton. Miller says that he was an outstanding basketball player as well as a good person.

Most Memorable Moment

 The most memorable moment of my life at the moment is graduating from high school (J.L. Mann High school) during a pandemic. In March 2020, things were not looking too good for in-person graduation or prom due to the spread of COVID. Every senior was very nervous and worried if we’d ever get the opportunity to walk across the stage for high school graduation. 

June 3rd, 2020 was the original date that we were supposed to graduate. June 3rd was not only the day I was supposed to graduate,  but that is also my mother’s birthday. I felt like graduating on her birthday would’ve been a cool gift. But COVID-19 had other plans. 

COVID was spreading rapidly throughout the US so fast that schools were doing drive-through graduation with no ceremony. At this time, my peers and I had no hope of having a normal graduation ceremony. 

Weeks of being hopeless and worried. The Greenville County School District announced that we are going to have a somewhat of a normal graduation ceremony on May 29th. What made our graduation not as normal as a usual ceremony is we were only able to invite two guests. But we as graduates were just thankful that we are able to walk across the stage to receive our diploma. After the graduation ceremony, it was much of a relief, disbelief, and bittersweet to be completely finished with high school. Although I was relieved to be finished with high school, the next worry was, am I going to be able to reside on campus for my first year. Weeks before its time to move into my dorm, South Carolina State University sends an email stating that we will not be having in-person classes nor will students be able to reside on campus. The year 2020 was the most memorable year for me. 

What Your Mask Say About You

As we all know, we are stuck in a pandemic. One of the main precautions in the pandemic is wearing a mask to minimize the spread of COVID-19.  With students being on campus, Universities are mandating face masks. I interview Claflin University and South Carolina State University students to ask them "what does your face mask say about you".

I first interviewed Janiya Burton-Allen, a student at Claflin University. Janiya says that her face mask says a lot about who she is and what she's for. "My face mask shows that I am contributing to slowing down the spread of COVID-19" I then asked Janiya, "Why did you choose a cloth mask instead of a surgical mask?" she answered, "I chose a cloth mask because it is more comfortable for me, it is thicker, and its also during the winter it keeps me warmer".
